40 Bags in 40 Days

We are at our official start for the new school year. While we do homeschool year round. August is the official kick off for the new year. After moving multiple times in the last five years, we are settled into our new home and ready for a big year in homeschooling. Our oldest is 16 and biting at the bit to get his learners. Along with the learners comes a drivers ed program. Should be interesting, our first time for this one.

Now to what the title is about. 40 bags in 40 days. After five years of moving and living out of boxes and all the stuff you gain, loose, break and re-buy through all that. We have more than just a little clutter hanging around. I came across this challenge to declutter 40 bags of trash, junk, and the no longer loved in the next 40 days. The original challenge was set up as a lent challenge for the 40 days before Easter. When I saw it, I thought it would be a great kick-off for the new school year, gathering 40 bags of stuff to be removed from our living spaces. We have made our list of 40 spaces to declutter, some spaces take up more than one slot because they are more than one bag, such as the office shelves. We were so excited about this challenge we have already taken out our first bag of paper clutter to the recycle bin!

We have completed the first two on the list. I didn't think about doing before and after shots. I think I will going forward. I am amazed at the difference this is making already!

Update: 12/28/2012

After writing this post and completing the projects for the first two days, we we had a rough fall. Too many bugs going around this year and it seems like my family caught everyone. I am thinking to try this for my New Year's resolution. I am going to have to split it into chunks of time because I have training I am attending half through January for a month. Actually I think I'll break it into 4 months. Ten days each month and then post my accomplishments. That way things that really need warmer weather can wait until April.
