Journey to the Well

For those of who have grown up around Church has heard about the story of encounter with the Samaritan woman at Jaccob's well when he stopped to rest one day. If you have not heard this story, you can read about it here: John 4:6-26.

Brooklyn Museum - The Woman of Samaria at the Well (La Samaritaine à la fontaine) - James Tissot - overall

Have you ever wondered how she ended up in that situation. How did she come to have five husbands? Why was she not married to the man she was with?

In today's world, it's not hard to imagine someone having had five husbands. We here about it all the time. In the days of Christ this was not common.

I came across this book that gives a plausible back story to the woman at the well. Journey to the Well: A Novel  written by Diana Wallis Taylor. She researched the life and times of the women of Samaria during Jesus' walk on the earth.

She wove historical details into the life of Marrah to give us a glimpse into what life was like for a Samaritan girl in Bible time. Fictional history stories, when researched properly, can really bring the Bible stories to life. And this book does not disappoint.
